Motorcyclist strikes three girls riding their bikes

Posted: Updated:

Many kids in our area are getting ready to go back to school, enjoying the last few days of summer.

For five girls in Rock Rapids, Iowa, their summer ends with two friends in the hospital after a late night accident.

They were riding their bikes along a country road, when they were struck by a motorcycle.

Angie Sippel was just about to watch television with her son when the accident happened outside her home. "I heard a noise and I know it was not right, so I came and turned my outside light on and I saw a big Harley lying at the end of my driveway," Sippel said.

Angie Sippel's quiet Monday evening ended when she went outside and took a closer look.

"I started to hear crying and screaming and looked over and saw my neighbor on the phone to 911 and saw the girls and their bikes, and then I knew something pretty bad had just happened," Sippel said.

Police say five girls were out riding their bikes when three of them were struck by the motorcyclist.  Sippel says one of the three injured girls said her ribs hurt.

"The other two, that I both know, go to my church. The one was pretty badly hurt, she had a broken leg. I knew she had a broken leg because she was complaining about it pretty bad. And then when I looked across the road, she was about the only one that wasn't screaming or crying but I knew she was hurt bad by the look on her face, she didn't look good at all," Sippel said.

Skid marks on the road show where the motorcyclist may have skidded about a dozen car-lengths before stopping at Sippel's driveway, with surprising results.

"The driver, much to my surprise, was up and walking around. He didn't seem to be injured," Sippel said.

Police identified the driver of the motorcycle as Daryl Hasche, 54, of Rock Rapids.  He was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Police say the two injured girls, Morgan Herda, 17, and Mackenzie Lutmer, 15, both of Rock Rapids, were airlifted to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.
