Police have arrested and identified the man who led them on a chase and standoff southeast of Sioux Falls Friday morning.
Tyson Wessels, 34, of Chancellor is charged with Aggravated Assault of an Officer and Third Degree Burglary for robbing an ATM in Valley Springs.
Police connected Wessels with two stolen cars including the pickup he was driving during the chase. So far, law enforcement has not charged Wessels for the stolen vehicles.
Police say the suspect had an accomplice with him but a name was not released and no charges were filed.
Wessels was tracked by GPS through the low-jack on the pick up allegedly stole. Police say during the chase Wessels crashed into two police vehicles before stopping in a cornfield.
The standoff involved several law enforcement agencies and one man in a cornfield near Harrisburg is over.
The initial standoff happened in the area of 276th Street and 479th Avenue in Sioux Falls. However, Wessels was captured near a farmhouse several miles away.
We don't know what prompted the standoff at this time but authorities tell KSFY News that a Sheriff's deputy approached Wessels in the pickup earlier Friday morning in Minnehaha County. Wessels did not pullover and sped off, leading authorities on a chase that went across state borders into Iowa and then back into South Dakota.
The Wessels got out of the pickup and ran into a cornfield near the intersection of 260th street and 480th Avenue which is just south of Lake Alvin.
Agencies on scene included the Minnehaha and Lincoln County Sheriff, Lyon County Sheriff (IA), South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, South Dakota Highway Patrol, and an Iowa Highway Patrol Plane is circling overhead.
Stay with KSFY News both on air and online as we will bring you more on the story as it develops.
