Hundreds gathered near the Oahe Dam to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Many of the guests were people who worked on the dam.
Former Senator George McGovern was invited to speak at the event but came down with a cold and was told, by doctors, to stay home.
"I started in '56, worked as a laborer in the winter months. And in the spring of '57, I got on as an iron worker," Elmer Tabbert said.
Tabbert is one of hundreds here to celebrate how far the dam, and communities around it, have come.
"It's quite amazing. Maybe I'll run into people I worked with. I'd enjoy that," Tabbert said. "It's enjoyable that I can be here 50 years alter and see some of the things that helped make Pierre grow," Tabbert said.
The dam helped accomplish just that, with the help of so many others.
"I had some good memories. When you think back at how things went, you met a lot of different people. It was an enjoyable time while I worked here," Tabbert said.
