Sioux Falls Airport shutdown catches some travelers by surprise

Posted: Updated:

It seems almost everyone has heard about the airport shutdown, but KSFY News met several people coming off the last plane in from Las Vegas, who were actually quite surprised

Bob Farra  came in on the last flight into Sioux Falls said, "what airport shuts down for the weekend? This airport? I'm leaving Monday, will it be reopened? Is this a joke? No, this is a great town so far."

Farra just flew in from Las Vegas with his family. His wife dawn said they didn't know anything about the closure.

"We had no idea. We didn't find out until we were rushed on the plane so the plane could get out of here in time to leave or otherwise, it would be stuck here," Dawn Farra said.

That's when the passengers on this last lucky flight in from Las Vegas found out about the shutdown.

"They announced it before we got on the plane because we were trying to find out gate and they said 'hurry up, we need to load up quickly so we could get to Sioux Falls in time' because of something about construction, that's all we knew," Dawn Farra said.

Airport employees hoping the shutdown would get them the weekend off, unfortunately won't be so lucky.

Airport Director Dan Letellier said, "some of the airlines, their employees are doing some training over the weekend and taking advantage of some downtime to do some training that is hard to accomplish when your working flights day to day."

Even with no air travelers this weekend, the rental car counters will be open for business.

Paul Werner at the Enterprise counter said "we were anticipating returns so it wasn't ever 'hey, we're going to have four straight weekends off type deal,' but it is limited. So we're going to have more time off than we normally would but still have to make an appearance to do returns."

For now, Letellier says the last plane has taken off from Sioux Falls Regional, until the airport re-opens, Monday night.

"There won't be any flight activity and typically there won't be anybody at the airline ticket counters," Letellier said.

And just another reminder, the airport is shutdown until Monday at 8pm.

The closures will continue for the next several weekends, with the airport closing at 2pm on Fridays, then re-opening at 8pm on Mondays, through Monday, September 17th, except Labor Day weekend.
