Benefit held for burned toddler

Posted: Updated:

Friends and family of burn victim Ryker Killian gathered at the American Legion in Mitchell to raise money to help with the medical and travel expenses of his recovery.

Last August, then 18-month-old Ryker was briefly alone in his bath when his older brother turned on the hot water. Ryker received 3rd degree burns on 35% of his body.

He was taken to a burn center in Minnesota, and continues to get medical treatment there. The expenses have mounted for the family, and Saturday's event was held to raise money to help pay for those expenses.

"Never ever leave your kids alone in the bath even for a minute or two minutes, because that's all it took to change our lives around. And check your water heater. We knew our hot water was too hot, but we just (mixed) the hot and cold but now lesson learned," mother Ashley Dorzok said.

The Mitchell Federal Credit Union has an account set up where people can donate to aid in Ryker's rehab and surgery expenses.
