ALEXANDRIA, S.D. (AP) - Records show that Hanson County has incurred more than $400,000 in the killing of a 16 year old Mitchell girl more than 2 1/2 years ago.
The costs to detain and prosecute 2 suspects in the death of Jasmine Guevara continue to increase. The county will ultimately only have to pay a fraction of the legal costs because it is a member of the Catastrophic Legal Expense Relief Program, which protects members from incurring catastrophically high legal expenses from any one incident
Guevara was kidnapped and killed in 2009. Alexander Salgado, 23, of Fort Wayne, Ind., pleaded guilty in the case and is serving a life sentence. Maricela Diaz, 17, of Fort Wayne, Ind., has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and is awaiting trial.
