The bells are about to ring on a new school year for thousands of students in and around Sioux Falls. For the rest of us, that means school safety is in full swing.
Whether kids take the school bus, carpool or walk, Sioux Falls Police say it's an excellent time to remind drivers of the law.
Shoppers at Target buy last-minute school supplies for a new classroom. While a lot can change in just one year, on the road, most driver laws stay the same.
But Sioux Falls Police say there are things we don't always think about.
"Many of us will drive the same routes on a daily basis that take us past a school. We've had 3 months with no school, we have to think about kids back in session and slow down," Sgt.. Loren McManus said.
August brings more parents, buses and students out on the roads and more kids walking or riding their bikes to school. For Mike Rudd, that's always a concern.
"I tell my son all the time, if we're in a parking lot, watch for cars because they don't watch for you. You don't know what kids are doing and they may not look," Mike Rudd said.
For April Rusche, a mom of two and a teacher, concerns are always high for her kids before and after school.
"I do worry, I feel better when they're back in my classroom, at home or safe somewhere else," April Rusche said.
Which is why Sioux Falls Police are on the look out for drivers speeding and distracted to keep the streets safe.
"You have to have your wits about you while you're driving tomorrow and through the rest of the school year," McManus said.
Some other helpful tips: Those school zones are 15 mph. You're asked to watch for kids around school buses. Try and avoid distractions like using your cell phones or drinking that morning coffee when you drive through a school zone.
