After an $8 Million renovation to it's surgery department, Avera Sacred Heart is already receiving plenty of praise from doctors and patients alike.

John Kieffer lives in White Lake but when his doctor said he needed knee surgery, John chose to have the procedure done at Avera Sacred Heart in Yankton.

With the hospital's newly renovated surgery department, the decision was an easy one; the experience John had, proved it was the right one.

"I was treated very well from the time I went through admissions, came in the surgery room, in the surgery room, post-op, in surgical recovery, I couldn't ask to be treated better." Said Kieffer.

John's surgery was done in August by orthopedic surgeon Jeremy Kudera with the Yankton Medical Clinic P.C. Eight months before that surgery, Dr. Kudera also replaced John's hip. That procedure was done at Avera Sacred Heart's previous surgery center.

John says in his opinion, the department's improvements made for a quicker and easier recovery.

"I had a private room, the nurses were great, always checking on me if I needed anything they were more than welcoming to do it, they went, I think out of their way." Said Kieffer.

Not only are patients enjoying the new digs at Avera Sacred Heart, surgeons are just as excited. Dr. Kudera says the new surgery center is an upgrade in every sense of the word.

"The surgery suites are large and they're spacious and the technological advances are wonderful and they really dotted every "i" and crossed every "t" it's wonderful to work there." said Dr. Kudera.

An interesting aspect of the surgery center is its configuration. All six surgical suites are built around a central supply area. Now, not only is everything at a surgeon's fingertips but if additional supplies are needed they can be delivered through the cabinets so the sterile environment is not breached.

For patients, that means less time on the table.

"Time is very valuable in surgery, now everything is right there very accessible and it's great for us as surgeons and surgery staff and again the patient as well." Said Dr. Kudera.

Dr. Kudera believes the Yankton community is extremely lucky to have a medical care facility that's second to none right in their backyard.

"I think people are realizing that you don't have to go to the bigger cities to get good medical care and these new operating rooms and facilities help enhance that, no question." Said Dr. Kudera.

And when it comes to choosing a hospital, John says there's also no question.

"It's a great place, I had a great experience and I would recommend this place to anyone to come and have surgery, I was very impressed." Said Kieffer.

John is recovering well from his surgery. He says the only downside is the two-hour car ride to and from White Lake. But adds, getting quality care and small town hospitality makes the trip more than worth it.

With the surgery department renovations completed crews now shift their attention to the hospital's $17 Million "Northern Lights' expansion.
