(Sioux Falls) On Friday night, the Aberdeen Central at Roosevelt football game will be the first one at the new and improved Howard Wood Field. The major renovations started after the last game was played there in October. And things are just about ready.
One of the first things fans will notice at the improved Howard Wood Field, is the new seats.
"They're still configured the same, but we replaced the old wooden bleachers with aluminum ones. The aisles are wider and there are railings. For those who need wheelchair access they'll have a real treat. We have a new area for them up high with a great view and there's an elevator to take them up to the top." says Sioux Falls Public Schools Athletic Director Mark Meile.
There's also a new two-level press box.
"It's not any bigger but it's up higher. We raised it up 10 to 12 feet. And it's all glassed in." says Meile.
There will be a couple of issues that those at the early games need to keep in mind. The track surface still needs to be laid down. No one will be allowed on the track.
"The track is a little behind schedule. We hope to have it done by the middle of next week before Friday night's Lincoln/Washington game, and then you have the Dakota Bowl. And then the following week there is the President's Bowl We'll get the lines down in the weeks later." says Meile.
Two of the most highly attended annual events are coming up at Howard Wood Field with the Dakota Bowl and President's Bowl. There will be less parking since the area where the new events center is being built has taken up large number on spots.
"I know with the Dakota Bowl they'll have a designated tailgate area. With the President's Bowl there will be a shuttle from the fairgrounds with buses." says Meile.
They will have a carpet placed over a portion of the track, for the teams and other officials to get onto the field.
