Gas prices continue to climb

Posted: Updated:

Unfortunately AAA says don't expect to see our higher gas prices start to come down until sometime after Labor Day.

According to AAA's Fuel Gauge Report the current national average price for a gallon of regular gas is $3.75. A week ago the average was $3.72, a month ago $3.48, and a year ago $3.60. That's a $.27 jump in a month, and $.15 year to year.

Here in South Dakota the current average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.74. A week ago the price was $3.74, a month ago $3.58, and a year ago $3.61. We are up about $.13 in a month.

Prices are also high in our region in general. In Minnesota the current average for a gallon of regular is $3.71. A month ago they were at $3.60. In Iowa the current average price for a gallon of regular is $3.67. A month ago they were at $3.47. In Nebraska the current average price for a gallon of regular is $3.75. A month ago they were at $3.57.

AAA says in one month we've seen the national average for a gallon of regular climb about $.27. AAA also says this national average is the highest ever for this time in history. AAA says this marks the first time since April 23rd that a national average in 2012 was the highest ever for the calendar day. Even with an anticipated post Labor Day decline in prices, AAA says the daily national average likely will continue to set a new record for each calendar day as we head into the fall.

AAA continues to expect that, given current conditions, prices at the pump will decline following Labor Day as the busy summer driving season ends and the switch over from summer- to winter-blend gasoline begins to take place.

AAA says While the national average price is $.15 cents higher than a year ago, the year-over-year increase is most dramatic in the Midwest and on the West Coast, where prices have been impacted by regional supply and distribution issues.

Prices also seem to be fluctuating quite a bit in Sioux Falls. Overnight Monday we found prices as low as $3.55 for a gallon of regular at Love's Gas Station, and $3.59 at the Flying J. From there we found prices ranging from $3.70 to $3.85 for regular gas.
