The USD Coyotes kick off the new season this weekend. A new era of Coyote football begins with new head coach Joe Glenn, and a new league in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Coyotes have ten starters back from last year's 6-5 team.
Glenn has a history of winning. He coached two Division II national title teams at Northern Colorado, and won an FCS title at Montana. And he's excited to do the same thing at his alma mater.
"You have to love what you are doing, and love the game of football, and love one another. I preach that, I'm a disciple of that. You have to love being a Coyote, and when you do that you play harder and coach harder." says Glenn.
On offense the Coyote only have four starters back, lead by senior wide reciever and big play guy Will Powell. Sophmore quarterback Josh Vander Maten enters his first season as the number one guy.
"Josh is a stud, he's one of the fastest guys on the team. And he can throw the ball 80-yards I think, which is good for me." says Powell.
"We have a lot of new faces, but Will Powell is a leader, and we have leaders in the line. So we'll take be fine." says Vander Maten.
On defense the Coyotes have six starters back lead by junior linebacker Tyler Starr. With a young offense, this side will have to really have to mesh early.
"We want to shut people down, allow seven points a game. Our defense needs to be a game changer." says Starr.
"We're young but that's okay. I like the energy, effort and enthusiam. When you have the three E's, you'll be okay." says Glenn.
The Coyotes open the season at Montana on Saturday at 2:30.
