Hundreds of people show up to events center groundbreaking

Posted: Updated:

It's a big day for the City of Sioux Falls and supporters of the new events center.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday for the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.

City leaders, construction crews, community members and events center volunteers are celebrating this groundbreaking moment.

Construction on the project has already started. Crews have been out here since the end of July.

The design on the facility is half complete.

Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether unveiled his plan for this project when he took office two years ago.

Over this time we have heard some lengthy debates on where this events center should be build. Many wanted it built downtown while others wanted it near the current arena.

Many people have also questioned how much this project will cost.

Last November it was up to you, the voters and you passed the $115 million project to be build at the arena.

In early August, the events center was officially named the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.

The city reached an agreement with First Premier Bank, Premier Bankcard and Sanford Health as they're now the official title sponsors.

You can watch this progress unfold right at your computer.

The city has set up a live camera on their website. We have the link to the upper left.

Completion is still set for the Fall of 2014.
