Tribal leaders holding teach-in about SD land

Posted: Updated:

EAGLE BUTTE, S.D. (AP) - A group spearheading an effort to buy land in South Dakota that Native American tribes consider sacred is holding a teach-in on Saturday during the annual Cheyenne River Sioux powwow.

Last Real Indians founder Chase Iron Eyes says in a news release that he and tribal leaders and activists will talk about the issue at 5 p.m. at the HVJ Lakota Cultural Center in Eagle Butte.

Last Real Indians and tribes of the Great Sioux Nation have been raising money to try to buy nearly 2,000 acres of land in the Black Hills. The tribes consider the site key to their creation story, and members fear new owners would develop the land they call Pe' Sla.

Following an outcry, a public auction for the land was canceled.
