Counterpart, Inc. to break ground on Brookings expansion

Posted: Updated:

Counterpart, Inc. in Brookings is breaking ground on an expansion Wednesday, with the help of the Governor's Office of Economic Development.

Counterpart is an industrial metal fabrication company that produces parts and assemblies for electronics, agribusiness, utility vehicle, polyethylene and door and window industries.

Counterpart, Inc. President Don Deibert said the company has diversified its operation in recent years. Deibert said the loan was necessary for the company to expand because it has become an engineering facility as well as a manufacturing facility.

"Customers come to us and want us to build their product," Deibert said. "The engineering quality department has expanded tremendously over the past few years."

According to the Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED), the firm obtained a Revolving Economic Development and Initiative (REDI) fund loan, a Small Business Association 504 loan, a Workforce Development grant, and Dakota Seeds funding through GOED.

On Wednesday, Counterpart is breaking ground on a 30,000-square-feet expansion—making this the company's third expansion since it began in 1996. The company leased buildings until 2001 when it built a 35,000-square-feet facility. The building was expanded by 15,000-square-feet in 2006.  The newest addition puts the company at a total of 80,000-square-feet of manufacturing space.

Counterpart, Inc. President Don Deibert said the company also purchased more equipment for the expansion. Deibert said overtime the new addition, which is expected to be finished in May 2013, should add 15-20 new jobs to its current 76-member staff.

"Once this addition is in place we will have the capacity to increase our output by 30 percent," Deibert said.
