Second South Dakotan dies from West Nile Virus, 119 cases total

Posted: Updated:

West Nile Virus has killed a second person in South Dakota as the number of human cases has jumped to 119.

The South Dakota Department of Health says the latest victim to die of West Nile Virus was 80-89 years old and lived in McPherson County. The first South Dakotan to die from the virus this year was out of Hughes County on August 6.

The South Dakota Department of Health updated the statistics Wednesday. The median age of humane cases is 48 years old, with ages varying from 12 to 86 years. The virus also has a split effect on men and woman with 50 percent each affected.

The most cases were reported the week around August 4—more than 40 cases were reported that week. However there is good news. The number of reported cases has been declining each week since the August 4 peak.

USAToday reports the Centers for Disease Control tallied 2,118 cases and 92 deaths as of Wednesday, which is a 25 percent increase from last week.
