Sioux Falls Airport to close this weekend

Posted: Updated:

If all goes well, the runway construction at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport could be finished early.

Sioux Falls Airport will be closed once again September 7 at 2 pm through September 10 at 8 pm. Construction workers will be working on miscellaneous projects like lightening the runway, electrical work and runway grooving.

The runway is expected to be closed September 14 through September 17 as well. However, Mike Wiederich, engineer with Goldsmith/Heck Engineers, said if all goes well only one day may be needed for clean up and testing.

The construction project replaces the concrete runway section lying at the intersection of runways 3-21 and 15-33. According to Sioux Falls Airport that patch of runway is more than 30 years old and is need of replacement. The project originally set aside four weekends to be completed.

The cost of the project is more than $7.7 million and is primarily funded by the FAA's Airport Improvement Program.
