Our KSFY.com Game of the Week was a great 9-man matchup as part of the annual FCA SoDak Bowl at Bob Young Field. Canistota is ranked No.1 in 9A and was riding a 25-game win streak.
Their opponent, Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan was No.1 in 9AA and held an 11-game win streak.
In a matchup of two of the state's top offenses, it was the defense which played a big factor tonight. At halftime, the Hawks and Seahawks had played to a 0-0 score.
However, in the third quarter, Canistota would break through. On 4th and 16, quarterback Cody Bunger hit running back Alex Robertson for a 26-yard gain, down to the 1-yard line. On that drive, Bunger would sneek it in to put the Hawks up 8-0.
Later in the quarter, they would strike again. This time, it was Bunger on an outside run, crossing the goaline to make it 16-0 Canistota.
Still, this game was not over yet. Back came the Seahawks, B-E-E quarterback Jace Connor hit Clayton Dye on the touchdown pass to cut it to a 16-8 deficit.
From there the Canistota defense would buckle down. Late in the fourth quarter, B-E-E had another shot but Hawks linebacker Dylan Siebert sacks Connor to kwell the rally.
Canistota wins the battles of the No. 1 teams, 16-8 over Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan.
