Alleged Cost Cutters gunman released from jail Monday

Posted: Updated:

KSFY has learned that 38-year-old Tyrone Leeon Smith was arrested Sunday night around 11:00 and charged with one count of simple domestic assault and one count of interfering with a communication device.  He appeared in court at 1:30 Monday afternoon and was released from jail five hours later.

Police have identified Smith as the gunman involved in an apparent murder-suicide at Cost Cutters on 41st and Kiwanis in Sioux Falls Tuesday afternoon.

Smith's body was discovered shortly before 4:00 Tuesday afternoon. He had been inside the salon since about 1:30 p.m.

Sgt. Loren McManus says police believe Smith had earlier taken his two young children from a baby sitter's home near the intersection of 18th Street and Holly Avenue.  A neighbor tells KSFY the babysitter ran to her home after Smith departed with the kids, told her he had "taken her babies" and asked her to call the police.

Soon after, police got a report of a car accident in the salon parking lot and discovered a woman in her early 20's dead of a gunshot wound inside the vehicle. The woman has been identified as Cost Cutters manager Amanda Connors.  McManus tells KSFY Conners was shot inside her car.

Smith then held four Cost Cutters employees, including his girlfriend, and his children hostage before releasing them and turning the gun on himself.  McManus says the children are with their mother.

The hostages and other witnesses were interviewed by police Tuesday evening, and KSFY expects to learn more at Wednesday's briefing.
