(Sioux Falls) Alex Shattuck has spent much of his life with a golf club in his hands.
"I haven't done anything else in long time. I used to play basketball and baseball." says Shattuck.
The summer before his freshman year of high school Alex went to a camp at the Hank Haney Junior Golf Academy at Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. He was then offered a scholarship to go to the world famous academy fulltime as a student. That's where he spent freshman and sophmore years.
"You go to class and then early in the day you go out and work on all aspects of your game. Then you play tournaments on the weekends. You have to be dedicated." says Shattuck.
The experience has opened up many opportunities.
"I went to Scotland with a family I met from the school. That wouldn't have happened if I hadn't gone to school there." says Shattuck.
This year, Shattuck is spending his junior year in Lake Mary, Florida, where's working everyday with Mike Bender, who's also the coach of PGA Tour player Zach Johnson.
"I'm going to work toward playing in college." says Shattuck.
While his game has certainly improved, he likes to come and play in South Dakota events like he did last summer in the SDGA Junior tournament.
"There's good competition wherever you go and play." says Shattuck.
