Computer scam targets South Dakota consumers

Posted: Updated:

A computer scam has surfaced in South Dakota.  Numerous South Dakota computer repair businesses have received personal computers with security issues.

When the repair shops asked the consumer how these problems occurred, each individual indicated they received a phone call from someone posing as a well-known computer company.

These scammers are calling consumers claiming they filed an error report and need to follow these steps to fix the issue.  However, the steps don't fix the issue they actually take the computer owner's computer and bank information

Gene Kopetsky, owner of R&K Computers tells consumer if they have fallen for the scam they need to contact a computer repair shop and their bank immediately to cancel credit cards.

If you have been a victim to this scam contact the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-300-1986.
