(Sioux Falls)-- Ice Sports Association (ISA) today announced a substantial donation toward its efforts to build a new community ice facility and unveiled a new name for the facility.
Sioux Falls retailer SCHEELS has donated $750,000 to the project, according to SCHEELS Corporate Leader Garth Caselli and Sioux Falls Store Manager Chris Kray.
The gift becomes part of ISA's multi-faceted fundraising plan to raise $7.7 million – largely from private sources -- to construct Phase 1 of an indoor ice complex with three sheets of ice and other spectator amenities.
"Scheels is a family-owned business that partners with their communities to promote healthy lifestyles and recreation," Caselli said. "We are proud to support the development of this urgently-needed community ice facility, and look forward to the programs and benefits it will bring to our youth and entire community and region."
Along with the gift announcement, ISA President Joe Zueger also announced that the facility will be referred to as the SCHEELS IcePlex from this point forward.
"The SCHEELS IcePlex name is one we are proud to associate with our new facility," Zueger said. "SCHEELS is a retail brand we all know and have grown to trust as a leader in this community, and there is a clear and obvious alignment between the ISA non-profit and SCHEELS business mission. We both believe in improving quality of life through an active lifestyle and pursuit of your passions."
The news of the SCHEELS contribution comes on the heels of action by the City of Sioux Falls on Tuesday night to approve $1.5 million in their 2013 CIP budget for the new facility. Combined with private fundraising that has ushered in more than $3.5 million with today's gift, the project has advanced considerably in recent days.
"This is an historic week. Our project went from about $1.8 million in private leadership funds to over $5 million in total funds raised," Zueger said. "We would not be where we are today without the support and leadership of countless generous individuals, along with the City of Sioux Falls, Sanford Health and SCHEELS."
The SCHEELS IcePlex will be located on the campus of the Sanford Sports Complex, just west of the regional airport in north Sioux Falls. Sanford Health made approximately 11 acres of land available to ISA to construct the new facility.
Plans are to break ground on the SCHEELS IcePlex in late 2013, with an anticipated opening date in the fall of 2014. In addition to open skating time for the public, the SCHEELS IcePlex will be home to the Sioux Falls Youth Hockey Association, the Sioux Falls Figure Skating Club, adult hockey leagues and new user groups such as the newly-formed Sioux Falls Curling Club.
