Recent weapons violations prompt reminder for Sioux Falls schools

Posted: Updated:

Recent cases involving weapons in Sioux Falls schools have prompt the superintendent to remind parents and students about the district's policy.

Superintendent Dr. Pam Homan sent a statement to parents reminding that students should never bring weapons of any kind to school. In the letter, Homan states there is no tolerance for weapons on school property before, during or after the school day.

She goes on to remind parents that South Dakota law requires the school board to expel a student from school for 12 months if a student brings a weapon to school—it does not matter why the student brought the weapon.

Homan says the reminder was due to several instances at different sites this year where students brought knives or guns including BB guns and air soft guns to school. Homan asks parents to talk to their kids and make sure that they never bring any type of weapon to school.
