Algae takes over lake in Waubay

Posted: Updated:

A lethal blue-green algae is taking over Bitter Lake in Waubay.  The algae already killed one cow in the area and farmers are taking the steps to prevent others from dying.

"The blue-green algae can be toxic to pretty much any animal that would consume it,"  Brian Blackwell of the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks said.  "So if a pet or cow would drink the water with blue-green algae in the system they could eventually do from that."

With the warm weather the area has been experiencing the algae was able to grow more freely.

When the algae dies it fills with a gas that allows the algae to float to the top of the water and available for animals to consume.

Blackwell predicts with the colder weather coming in the algae will die off soon.
