American Airlines cancels flights with few options for passengers

Posted: Updated:

If you intend to book a flight on American Airlines, you may want to come up with a plan B.

American sent out layoff notices to 11,000 workers this week.

And, now the airline is canceling flights, leaving some travelers wondering what to do.

Some travelers upon hearing the news of American's flight cancellations may want to be proactive and try to change their flights in advance,  but we spoke with a travel agent who says, not so fast, being proactive is not an option the airline is offering.

With the news of American Airlines canceling flights, travel consultant Lorie Buus said some fliers already are concerned about their travel plans.

"I know that we've had some emails, some calls on the potential of their flights being disrupted and what are they going to do," Buus said.

Buus said there's not much travelers can do besides wait to find out if their flight's been canceled.

"They don't have a lot of options unless they're willing to give up the value of that ticket, they'll return it as a credit and purchase it, a ticket, on another flight and have the security they're probably looking for," Buus said.

And travelers who want to be proactive and call the airline in advance will probably not get the answer they're looking for.

"Not unless a policy is in place or a waiver's in place, they're not going to be able to call up the airline or travel agent and say 'hey, this scares me, I need to get booked onto another flight,'" Buus said.

Buus said American has a few options for travelers to consider.

"They'll get the option of full refund of what they paid for their ticket. They will get the option of taking another flight within a 300 mile radius of their original departure or arrival city. They will get the option of flying on another airline, but that option is not put in place until 24 hours of their original departure."
