University of South Dakota bans smoking on campus

Posted: Updated:

Smoking on the University of South Dakota campus is banned starting in January.

The USD Student Government Association and Faculty Senate already endorsed the ban, and now the USD Executive Committee voted to ban smoking on the campus. The ban takes effect January 9, 2013.

Even though the smoking ban was passed just recently, Student Government Association President Alissa VanMeeteren noted the initiative has been in the making for nearly a decade. VanMeeteren said recent student response helped fuel a positive process to enacting the resolution.

"This is an example of USD Truly moving onward," VanMeeteren said in a news release. "I think it's so important for students to get behind an issue like this and it's a credit to the administration. This decision shows that our administration has students' interests at heart."
