Huron pushes compost for soil, water conservation

Posted: Updated:

HURON, S.D. (AP) - The city of Huron is giving away composts to residents, saying it's a good way to enrich soil and conserve water as continuing dry weather heads toward winter.

The city approved the program to give away surplus material form the city-owned Great Plains Classic Compost.

Superintendent Dale Fortin says the city has a surplus of 2,000 cubic yards of compost available to residents.

The city says spreading compost on lawns, gardens and flower beds enriches the soil and reduces winter damage and the amount of watering needed in the spring.
