Tonight's Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week has a 3.9 grade point average at Canton High School. He plays baseball, basketball and football and is a member of the National Honor Society. Zach DeJong is hard worker, as you will see tonight.
You can frequently see Zach DeJong in the halls of Canton High School, but this piece of video is a rarity as he is actually standing still. Zach is usually busy running from class to class and those classes are not cakewalks. "I got 3 AP classes, a couple of them are pretty hard science classes so...and then I am taking an engineering class...it's kind of fun."
Kind of fun for a guy who likes to think in terms of equations and angles. Zach's science teacher, Jordan Hout, is also his basketball coach and says Zach is unique. "What really sets him apart is that he doesn't just care about wanting to get the A or the B, he wants to learn the material and focus on that and excel in that and apply it."
And where will Zach apply all of this knowledge next year? He doesn't know yet: he is still considering colleges. But he says he wants to stay close to home.. he does know for certain what he wants to study. "Hopefully mechanical engineering but I guess whatever college....wherever I choose in college will probably be it."
For being named our Scholar of the Week, Zach will receive a $100 scholarship from Southeastern Electric Cooperative, which is a local Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
