Bathroom bandit strikes at Sioux Falls fast food restaurants

Posted: Updated:

Several fast food restaurants in Sioux Falls were robbed Thursday afternoon, but the bandit wasn't after cash or curly fries.  The target of the crime spree was the bathroom.

Police say someone stole toilet piping and automatic flushing mechanisms in the men's restroom at the Hardee's and Taco Bell on West 12 Avenue and the McDonald's on West 41 Street.

Hardee's general manager Ron Conkling said it was just about the craziest thing he's ever seen at work.

"About 1:15 pm I went to the men's bathroom just doing my checks and saw that the piping to the men's urinal was missing," Conkling said.

The piping and fixtures were not copper as you might expect.  The restaurants estimate the value of each fixture to be around two or three hundred dollars.

The bathroom bandit even has police officers scratching their heads.

"This is the first I've ever heard of people stealing toilet fixtures," Officer Sam Clemens said.

Luckily, non of the restaurants suffered any flooding or damage.  Conkling said the bandit must have known his way around a monkey wrench.
