Earlier Story:

Authorities say one person has died and three others were hurt after an early-morning fire destroyed a mobile home in Mitchell.

Authorities tell us a family lived in that mobile home and the person who died was 59-year-old Cheryl Lynn Roop who was a resident of the home.

Three others have been treated and released.

It happened in the 900 block of West 2nd Avenue around 4 o'clock this morning.

KSFY News spoke with neighbors in that area and some even knew the family.

Mitchell Public Safety says it received the call just after 4a.m. this morning and by the time they got to the mobile home, it was fully engulfed in flames.

One neighbor said the sound of sirens didn't wake him up in the middle of the night, but his barking dog did, which seemed to know something was wrong.

Cecil Wilson said "my dog was carrying on barking and everything. I got up and I heard some sirens but I didn't think anything about it so I let her out and happen to see somebody run down through here with lights on, so I went out and looked and saw a fire.">

His barking dog and the sounds of fire crews rushing to the scene were not the only noises to get Wilson's attention this morning.

"About five minutes later, here comes another truck and it laid the hoses down and I heard about three or four explosions go off," Wilson said.

Later in the day, he heard the news about what happened.

"I hear just a few minutes ago, four people were in the trailer, three got out and one didn't make it," Wilson said.

Wilson didn't know the people who lived in the home, but David Wise who owns the property did.

"I knew the mother, I knew the daughter and I had seen the baby. I don't know the child's father," Wise said.

"The older lady had a stroke, she just got around with a walker," Wise said.

Wise said the woman who died was trying to take care of her daughter and grandchild.

"She was a nice lady. because of her condition, she had problems, but she paid her rent. she was a proud woman," Wise said.

Mitchell public safety has not released the name of the 59-year-old woman who died in the fire.

An autopsy will be performed on Monday.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but authorities say it does not appear to be suspicious.
