The Pierre Street railroad bridge captured another victim as a semi got stuck under the structure yesterday. Pierre Police Captain Elton Blemaster says dispatchers were contacted about 6:45 a.m. Thursday and were told that a semi was stuck under the bridge.
The driver, 60-year-old Lowell D. Wiggins of Halstead, Kansas, was driving a tractor trailer rig on Pierre Street. The truck is owned by a Salina, Kansas company. The rig was too tall to fit under the bridge and its trailer became stuck.
The tractor sustained about $4,000 damage and the trailer was completely destroyed, with damage estimates for the trailer at $30,000. The train bridge was not damaged. Wiggins was cited for a Truck Route violation. A tow company from Chamberlain was contacted to remove the truck from the bridge.
It took several hours to eventually clear the truck from under the bridge and get it moved off Pierre Street.
