SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The head of the Sioux Falls Lincoln High School band is retiring after this year.

Bob Carlson says that he's been a band director his whole life and it's his lifetime passion.

Over his 44-year career, Carlson's bands have marched at numerous competitions, four Minnesota Vikings games and one Green Bay Packers game.

Carlson's son Dan has worked by his father's side at Lincoln High for more than 10 years. He says Carlson has been a great mentor, and they we get along well.

Dan Carlson writes the band's drills and directs Lincoln's other bands. Kevin Carlson also helps design drills.

After this year, Carlson's sons will have to go it alone.

The elder Carlson says he feels like he's been blessed.
