The Country Apple Orchard host the annual harvest festival

Posted: Updated:

Chilly weather Saturday wasn't stopping families from picking pumpkins.

The Country Apple Orchard is held their annual harvest festival this weekend.

Next weekend is the pumpkin festival.

Many enjoyed some falls treats, horse hay rides, pony rides and of course picking pumpkins.

"It is kind of fun to do something different, a little fun outdoors with the kids," Shelli Colins said.

The Great Pumpkin Weigh In was also at the Country Apple Orchard.

Organizers say there were 6 pumpkins brought in by adults and then 3 other large pumpkins brought in by kids.

Cassandra Swanson with the orchard gives us the key to growing giant pumpkins like these.

"I think lots of money. You have to have good seed but it takes a lot of time. They work and maintain the vines, use fertilizer all summer long and baby these pumpkins," Cassandra Swanson said.

The winning pumpkin weighed in at 1012 pounds and was grown by Kevin Marsh from Parker, South Dakota. Runner up was 772 pounds from someone in Sioux Falls.
