More than forty percent of freshmen at Northern State University qualify to take at least one remedial class.
If a student does not score at least a 17 on an area of their ACT, they are subject to taking additional remediation courses.
Over the last five years NSU has seen an increase in the amount of students who require this extra help. They have even gone as far to hire remediation specialists to help with the issue.
Dr. Thomas Hawley, the Vice President for Academic Affairs sees the remedial program to be beneficial to students in need.
"It is a very positive thing because what we try to be is a university open to students of South Dakota," Hawley said. "We help them to be successful and achieve their educational and career goals at the same time"
Math, English, and Reading are the remediation courses offered at NSU.
