Family escapes early morning fire in Harrisburg

Posted: Updated:

A Harrisburg family was sleeping when a fire broke out in their garage around 2:20 Wednesday morning. One person was treated for smoke inhalation and two pets were rescued.

Crews on the scene tell us the fire started in the garage of the home around 2:20 Wednesday morning. A Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy saw smoke coming from the back side of the garage and called it in to dispatchers.

At the time of the fire a husband and wife, 2 small kids , a dog, and a cat were inside the home. All of the family got out of the home safely and fire crews were able to rescue the family dog and cat.

Before crews arrived a man living at the home tried to open the garage but heavy smoke came pouring out. We're told he was taken away and treated for smoke inhalation. We spoke with that man's wife and she says he is doing okay and is back with his family. She also tells us it was the smell of smoke that woke the family up. She says the family just moved into the home in July. She says two cars in the garage were destroyed. She says the family does have insurance on the home. For now she says they will be staying at a hotel.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Smoke damage is throughout the home. Most of the fire damage was done to the garage and to the roof.
