Two people were arrested on marijuana charges after an undercover cop saw a drug deal in Sioux Falls.

Wednesday night at about 8:30, the undercover officer observed a drug deal taking place at the corner of East Nye Street and Chicago Avenue. The officer reported the license plate number and the car was stopped at 26th Street and Southeastern Avenue a short while later.

Police said when they approached the car they could smell marijuana. Offices found 20 grams of packaged marijuana inside the car. They also found 12 grams of marijuana on the driving and 15 grams of marijuana on the passenger. Police said the drugs looked like they were packaged for sale.

The driver of the car, a 17-year-old from Brandon, was arrested for possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute one oz but less than half a pound, misdemeanor possession of marijuana with intention to distribute and intent to distribute in a drug free zone.

The passenger Daniel Helm, 18, of Sioux Falls was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, felony possession of marijuana with one oz. or less and intent to distribute in a drug free zone.

At Thursday's police briefing, Officer Sam Clemens said there were no other specific details regarding the drug deal.
