Dan Genzler, KSFY Prep Football Writer/Blogger, Gridiron Blitz, Focus on FiveA lot is at stake for South Dakota prep football teams as they prepare for the final night of the regular season on Thursday.
Take Class AA for example. This is the second straight year that AA teams have competed for a first-round bye, which goes to the top four teams based on power points. Top-ranked Sioux Falls Washington (58.125 power points) and #2 Brandon Valley (56.625) have clinched first round byes. After that, teams are battling for the other two spots. Roosevelt (54.5) and Yankton (53.125) own byes as things currently stand. After Thursday, who knows?
Remember, Roosevelt meets Washington, Yankton plays Brandon Valley and O'Gorman and Lincoln clash. Lincoln, which has 52.375 power points is not yet out of the picture for a bye but need a win over a hot O'Gorman team, which has won five straight.
In Brandon, the Lynx will host Yankton the ESD title with the Bucks also needing a win to hang onto a first round bye. Washington's showdown with #3 Roosevelt at Howard Wood Field should also prove interesting. Roosevelt has one loss - by one point to Lincoln on a missed extra point. It would appear that Roosevelt should be safe for a third spot.
This #1 Washington vs. #3 Roosevelt match up involves the teams that played for the 11A title a year ago with Roosevelt winning, 31-17, in the DakotaDome. We should remember that Washington, which will try for an unprecedented sixth straight AA title game appearances, knocked off Roosevelt, 34-29, in the 2011 regular season finale. That verdict cost the Rough Riders an undefeated season and top seed in the playoffs.
Dell Rapids appears to be the 11A team to beat. A two-time defending champion, they have only a loss to Tri-Valley and are top-ranked. Tea Area rebounded from two losses and have skills players to perhaps make a play for the top rung. Dakota Valley, led by Tanner Lambert, and Harrisburg, led by Andrew McCuen, along with perennial power West Central will also make their play for a championship.
In 11B, four teams - Flandreau, Tri-Valley, Winner and Aberdeen Roncalli - seem headed for a semifinal showdown. Combined the four teams have a combined 27-1 record with Tri-Valley's loss coming against Flandreau (24-22). Winner and Roncalli have completed their regular seasons and await the playoffs on Tuesday.
The 9AA favorite appears to be unbeaten Kimball/White Lake (8-0) but defending champion Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan is one of several teams that could cop top honors when the playoffs begin. Deubrook Area and White River are unbeaten squads that will be tested this week.
In Class 9A, six teams remain undefeated, including three from region two. Hamlin (7-0) has the slight edge in power points at 59.286 over defending 9A champion Canistota (7-0, 58.857) and Arlington (7-0, 58.0), as those teams jostle for playoff positions. Herreid/Selby and Warner are both 7-0 in region 1 and have the same power points at 58.857. Faith (7-0) in region four is unbeaten and has a firm grasp on the region. We may see a first round matchup matching the two of three unbeatens in region two. Now wouldn't that be a way to kickoff the games.
Harding County is the only unbeaten team in 9B and appear to be at the head of the class. Keep your eye on Colome, Hitchcock-Tulare, Viborg-Hurley and perhaps defending 9B titlist Waverly-South Shore.
As the season ends on Thursday, a lot of notable matchups dot the prep landscape, including 9A #5 Arlington (7-0) will host 9AA #3 Deubrook Area (7-0) in a game for the Dakota Valley title. Out west, unbeaten White River (7-0) will face 9B #2 Colome while 9B #1 Harding County (7-0) travels to unbeaten and unranked Faith (7-0). In addition, 9B #4 Viborg-Hurley (5-2) will look to end a two-game losing streak when they face off with 9A #5 Irene-Wakonda (6-1).
Don't forget about a couple of key matchups across the border. In Iowa, two ranked teams Akron-Westfield and West Lyon will meet as will 2A #1 Boyden Hull-Rock Valley and Central Lyon/George Little Rock.
Mirror Images? Winner and Flandreau
As the final week of the regular season arrives, #3 Winner and #1 Flandreau appear to be mirror images. Both teams feature ground-focused attacks that have gone unbeaten and built up a huge point differential on a philosophy of ball control, no turnovers and tough defense. The Fliers, which own a 373-to-50 scoring differential, has totaled 2,307 yards on 267 carries for 329.6 per game and 8.64 carries. Winner, which owns a 343-to-52 scoring edge, averaged 314.3 yards rushing per game and has totaled 350 carries for 2,514 yards or 7.18 per rush. Both teams have a deep backfield with Winner's Kyle Bertram, Ben Connot and Tracy Meyer and Flandreau's Jacob Patterson, David Parsley and Mitchel Foster offering both explosiveness and hard-nosed running.
Dual Threats - Bartling Reaches Rare Double; Chester Area's Opdahl Close
In South Dakota prep circles, reaching the double of 1,000 yards both passing and rushing is a rarity. A year ago, Nick Mears of Milbank (did it two years in a row) and Matt Thorson of Groton Area had the rare double. Now Jaden Bartling of Gregory is the first in South Dakota to do it this year. Bartling has completed 51-of-87 for 1,024 yards and 18 TDs through the air. On the ground he has 79 carries for 1,027 yards and 15 TDs. In all, he has 33 combined TDs with 2,254 all-purpose yards in leading Gregory to a 6-1 record. He has had four games of 200 yards or more including 18-208-5 TDs vs. Colome; 9-209-3 TDs vs. Avon; 11-268-2 TDs vs. Scotland; and 16-210-TD vs. Andes Central last week. Bartling has accounted for five or more TDs four times this season with his seven TDs against Colome a career-best.
Austin Opdahl of Chester Area is not candidate for the 1,000-1,000 club. He has completed 44-of-103 passes for 769 yards and 11 TDs and also has 134 carries for 999 yards and 13 TDs. While accounting for 24 TDs, Opdahl has accomplished a rather remarkable streak of rushing for at least 100 yards in seven straight games. Opdahl's totals include 18-162-2 TDs; 21-214-2 TDs; 15-110-2 TDs; 16-148-2 TDs; 19-146-3 TDs; 27-118-TD; 18-137-TD. It should be noted that the Chester Area quarterback has done it against big-time competition, including 9AA #4 Howard (5-2), Parker (5-2), 9A #1 Canistota (7-0), and 9AA #2 Bridgwater-Emery/Ethan (5-2).
