We spoke with a deputy at the Adams County Sheriff's Office Thursday morning. He says the fire started near Bucyrus, North Dakota around 4:00 Wednesday afternoon. A stretch of Highway 12 was closed while the fire was burning but the deputy tells us Highway 12 is back open Thursday morning.
The fire destroyed many buildings in Bucyrus. At least four homes were destroyed in the small town but a few were also left standing. The deputy also believed the church in town did catch fire but he thinks crews were able to save the church.
As of 6:20 Thursday morning the deputy said some small fires are still burning and crews are keeping a close eye on embers.
Crews from South Dakota and North Dakota worked together to get this fire under control. Thankfully no one was hurt in the fire.
The town was completely evacuated while crews fought the grassfire. We're told they will be let back into town when officials feel it is safe to do so.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
