South Dakota trooper undergoes successful brain surgery

Posted: Updated:

The South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper hit by a car during a chase in Sioux Falls Wednesday underwent successful brain surgery.

According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, trooper Andrew Steen, 34, underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. Doctors at Sanford Medical Center said the surgery was not uncommon with head injuries like the one suffered by trooper Steen, who remains in critical condition.

Steen, an eight-year veteran of the South Dakota Highway Patrol, was struck by a vehicle in the line of duty following an attempted traffic stop that escalated into a pursuit.

"Andrew is receiving the best possible care, and he has the full support and prayers of not only his family and friends but also of everyone in the South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Department of Public Safety,'' Col. Craig Price said in a news release. "His family and the Patrol have been gratified by the outpouring of public support, and we continue to ask for good thoughts and prayers for our trooper in his recovery.''

A benefit fund, titled the Trooper Andrew Steen Benefit Fund, has been set up at Wells Fargo. Donations may be made at any Wells Fargo institution in the United States.
