Thousands of hunters welcomed at Sioux Falls Airport

Posted: Updated:

Vendors will once again line up for hunters arriving at the Sioux Falls Airport. This way hunters get a chance to pick up supplies right at the airport. A lot of hunters will tell you it's kind of like one stop shopping and something they look forward to every year. Many hunters have made South Dakota pheasant hunting a tradition for years and years. For some it's even spanned a few generations. The Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau organizes the big welcome at the airport every year. Last year the event expanded into a two day ordeal which has continued this year. It started Thursday at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport and it will continue Friday.

Thousands of hunters will be heading our way for pheasant season. State officials are saying this should be a great season for pheasant hunting and that the statewide pheasant population is up from last year. Hunters can thank the mild winter and ideal weather during the nesting and brood-rearing season for the increase in birds. More than 1.5 million pheasants were harvested last year and officials are saying this should be another great year. The season runs from October 20th until January 6th. The daily limit is 3 rooster pheasants. The possession limit is 15 rooster pheasants. That limit accrues at the rate of 3 birds a day and 15 birds may not be possessed until after the 5th day of hunting. Shooting hours are noon central time to sunset from October 20th through the 26th and then 10:00am central time to sunset the rest of the season.
