BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) - A researcher at South Dakota State University is examining organ donation among Native Americans.
Nancy Fahrenwald is an associate professor at SDSU's College of Nursing. She is leading a $1.3 million study that will focus on the best ways to communicate to Native American patients and families about organ donation and their options. Native Americans have a higher chance of suffering from kidney disease than their non-Native counterparts and have a disproportionate number waiting on organ transplant lists.
In South Dakota, Fahrenwald's research will take place with the Rosebud Sioux, Cheyenne River Sioux and Oglala Sioux tribes.
