Mitchell's Corn Palace got a little tongue-in-cheek attention Thursday night thanks to Comedy Central's "Colbert Report".
The show highlighted the palace's problems with this year's drought in a way that is making city leaders chuckle at themselves at little bit.
When you get the attention of the Colbert Report, you need to expect that they'll have a little bit of fun at your expense. And on the day after, the director of the Mitchell Corn Palace is hearing from a lot of people. "The emails that we're getting are saying what a wonderful place. It looks great, we went to the web site, we'd love to visit some time." Mark Schilling says when the Colbert Report contacted him about the drought wiping out four of the 12 corn varieties used to make the Palace's murals....he agreed to be interviewed...knowing their problem would be the target of jokes..and he was right.
"All in all it was in good fun..." Mitchell Mayor Ken Tracy says all kidding aside, the Colbert Report's report...gave the Corn Palace national exposure. "It might have been a little humorous and funny but at the same time it depicts the corn palace and the history of it and I just think in the long run it's bound to help us."
Corn Palace director Mark Schilling says the exposure potential it huge:
An average of 1.2 million people watch the Colbert Report every night.
