RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A former Rapid City man accused of putting drugs in his girlfriend's beverages in an attempt to kill her unborn baby has been charged for a second time.
Alfredo Vargas was charged a year ago with attempted murder, but the case was dismissed after this attorney challenged the prosecution's expert witness.
Prosecutors claim that Vargas, 35, put an herb called Blue Cohosh into one of his girlfriend's drinks. The herb is commonly used as part of a tea to induce labor.
Authorities say the woman delivered a healthy baby.
Pennington County Deputy State's Attorney Scott Roetzel says he has a new expert who is medical doctor and is prepared to testify in the case.
