Tributes come in for former Senator George McGovern

Posted: Updated:

"George McGovern was clearly one of South Dakota's most outstanding public servants. The USA and the world would have been better off if he had defeated Richard Nixon in the 1972 presidential election." — South Dakota native Al Neuharth, Cocoa Beach, Fla., founder of USA TODAY, Freedom Forum and Newseum
"Our hero, role model and remarkable friend, U.S. Senator and historian George Stanley McGovern, was a courageous, wise, noble, kind and decent man who inspired a more peaceful, just, healthy and humane world. There are some people we wish could stay with us at least a while longer. Their presence is reassuring. George McGovern is one of those people. We miss him dearly but will never forget the high principles he upheld and the great lessons he taught us." -- Jack Marsh, Sioux Falls, S.D., president of the Al Neuharth Media Center at the University of South Dakota and the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute

"Senator George McGovern lived a life of exemplary service. George's legacy of service will live on at the leadership program created in his name by his beloved Dakota Wesleyan University and in the hearts of all of those who took courage and inspiration from his public life and quiet, but powerful voice in the counsels of government. Throughout his post-political life, George dedicated himself to the service of his fellow man in the crusade against hunger around the world. Today South Dakota mourns the loss of a war hero and a great statesman, and our history will forever reflect the impact of George McGovern. Despite our political differences, I was always proud to call Senator McGovern my friend and he will be deeply missed by those he met and those who were fortunate enough to experience his goodwill through the world. Kimberley and my prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time." -- Senator John Thune, (R) South Dakota

"I was saddened to learn of the death of Senator McGovern. George McGovern was a self-made man who served our nation, in war and in peace, with courage and conviction," the Governor said. "He worked hard on behalf of South Dakota, and made history as the only South Dakotan to be nominated for President.  Linda and I extend our sympathies to the McGovern family." -- Governor Dennis Daugaard, (R) South Dakota

"George McGovern was a South Dakota institution. He has inspired countless Americans to get involved in the political process and will be remembered for his passionate commitment to South Dakota and to the hungry of the world. On a personal note, Senator McGovern was always unfailingly kind to me. His presence will be missed in South Dakota. Bryon and I send our thoughts and prayers to the McGovern family and to all of the senator's friends and loved ones during this difficult time."  -- Rep. Kristi Noem, (R) South Dakota
"Barbara and I are saddened by the news of Senator George McGovern's passing. He was a dear friend to both of us throughout the years. George was a compassionate man with a truly deep devotion to public service. Whether it was serving as a bomber pilot in World War II, as an international leader in fighting hunger, as a talented teacher, or as Senator, he served with uncompromising values and commitment.  His leadership inspired many, including myself. He will be missed by countless people across South Dakota and the world, but mostly by the family that he loved. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McGovern family." -- Sen. Tim Johnson, (D) South Dakota
"George McGovern dedicated his life to serving the country he loved.  He signed up to fight in World War II, and became a decorated bomber pilot over the battlefields of Europe.  When the people of South Dakota sent him to Washington, this hero of war became a champion for peace.  And after his career in Congress, he became a leading voice in the fight against hunger.  George was a statesman of great conscience and conviction, and Michelle and I share our thoughts and prayers with his family." -- President Barack Obama

"Jill and I are profoundly saddened to hear about George McGovern's passing. I was honored to serve with him, to know him, and to call him a friend. George believed deeply in public service. It defined him as a Senator and as a man. And he never stopped serving for his entire life – whether it was his courage in World War II, his time in Congress, or his fight to eliminate hunger at home and abroad. Above all, George McGovern was a generous, kind, honorable man. He will be missed, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family today." -- Vice President Joe Biden

"Today we have lost a leader, patriot, and advocate for those in need, Senator George McGovern.  Senator McGovern always had the courage to stand up for his convictions, and his lifelong commitment to serving our country —first in World War II and later in elected office—was an inspiration to so many of us." -- Democratic Party National Convention Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz

"George McGovern was a war hero, a statesman, and a champion of those who are sometimes forgotten. Simply put, he was a good man who always did what was right regardless of what was easy. He lived a lot of life in 90 years and will be held up as a role model for generations to come."-- Ben Nesselhuf, Chairman of the South Dakota Democratic Party

"He served the state and nation with courage and distinction over many decades while modeling humility and civility in public life. Especially significant was his advocacy for the poor and under-nourished both here in South Dakota and around the world. As an educator focusing on social justice, Senator McGovern will be remembered for personally living the corporal works of mercy to feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty. Many were given new opportunities to live healthy and productive lives because of his efforts. May he rest in peace." --Most Reverend Paul J. Swain of the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls
