SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The casket carrying ex-U.S. Sen. George McGovern has arrived at Sioux Falls' First United Methodist Church, where hundreds of people, including Vice President Joe Biden, are expected to pay their respects.
The open casket, a dark wood draped with the U.S. flag, arrived at about 11:45 a.m. Thursday, more than an hour before the 1 p.m. public viewing. It sits at the front of the church beneath an ornate pipe organ.
Black-and-white photos of McGovern are projected onto screens on each side of the sanctuary. To the left of the casket is an easel with a photo of a young McGovern in military uniform. To the right is a photograph of him during his failed 1972 presidential bid.
McGovern died Sunday in hospice care surrounded by his family.
