Many people we spoke with tonight who attended the prayer service worked with McGovern on his 1972 campaign.
People who attended McGovern's prayer service said there were several great moments during the night.
They also commented the vice-president's speech was very remarkable.
Teresa Petrovic worked on McGovern's 1972 campaign and came all the way from Washington D.C. to pay her respects.
"The service was phenomenal. Long, but it didn't feel so long, you just wanted more," Petrovic said.
Denny Wynn came from Sioux City, Iowa. He also worked on McGovern's 1972 campaign.
"It was awesome in a word. Inspirational and it was unbelievable. I didn't expect it. The music was phenomenal. That group East of Westreville was one of the best quartets I've ever heard. The speeches were fantastic. We had Tim Johnson, Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin, and numerous politicians. Joe Biden spoke toward the end. It was just, it was amazing. It was a beautiful testimony to a man that I've admired all my life," Wynn said.
Wynn says coming here tonight validates everything he has believed in.
"He should be an inspiration to all of us. South Dakota should be very proud, very proud to have a George McGovern," Wynn said.
Petrovic said McGovern changed her life.
"He kind of reaffirms your own goodness, if that's kind of selfish to say. But it reaffirms your own goodness when you know that you knew that person and he embraced everyone and that was really celebrated tonight," Petrovic said.
People say it was an intimate and personal service.
Some other comments people made to describe tonight are that it was appropriate, there were warn moments and funny anecdotes throughout the night.
Many were touched by the services to honor a man who they say did so much for so many.
