South Dakotans pay their respects to honor George McGovern

Posted: Updated:

While many prominent figures from the world of American politics attended today's celebration of George McGovern's life, most of the crowd was private citizens bidding farewell to a man they admired.

KSFY News spoke with a few of those people after the service.

There were people from all walks of life at today's service.

Many of them told me they wanted be here to thank him for his service to the people of South Dakota.

Susan Lee of Sioux Falls said "it was very, very moving and it was a wonderful tribute to him, the son of South Dakota."

Lee said the service was remarkable.

"Every speaker was just very eloquent and very sincere and it was lovely," Lee said.

Lee said she is grateful for McGovern's dedication to the state.

"Senator McGovern was a wonderful representative of our state and since I moved here in 1967, I thought a lot about him and his family," Lee said.

Susan's husband George was equally moved by the service.

"I was very, very moved. I was very happy that I attended and anybody that missed this event missed one of the greatest things that ever happened in South Dakota.  It was just fantastic," George Lee said.

George Lee said McGovern will be fondly remembered.

George McGovernwas a standard of our state. he's number one and we will miss him and we loved him and he should be an inspiration to every body in the state to try to do the best they can in life," George Lee said.

George and Susan Lee's comments echo what many told us today.

Many people who came out of the Washington Pavilion seemed almost uplifted by the services.

A fitting tribute to the passing of a man who dedicated his life to public service and to the people of South Dakota.
