BHSU Receives $10,000 for Native American Scholarships

Posted: Updated:

A Colorado woman has donated $10,000 to establish an endowment fund to be used for scholarships for Native American students at Black Hills State University in South Dakota.

Joscelyn Blumenthal, of Boulder, Colo., says she wanted to start a scholarship for Native American students to help them find ways to bring their traditions' wisdom into the field of environmental studies.

She says she decided on BHSU after hearing about the school's large Native American student population.

Preference for the scholarships will be given to Native American students who are studying Environmental Physical Science or any other field related to math or science.

BHSU vice president of university advancement Steve Meeker says education is a pressing concern for the Native American community, and Blumenthal's donation will help students obtain a degree.
