Taking you back to the Moeller trial in the 1990's
This execution has been more than two decades in the making. 9-year-old Becky O'Connell was last seen in the summer of 1990. We take you to the trial in 1992.
It was Omer's Market in Sioux Falls 22 years ago that 9-year-old Becky O'Connell was last seen. The next day in 1990, her body was found at Lake Alvin in Lincoln County.
During the trial, witnesses took the stand saying they saw a pick up truck at the lake, which was similar to what then-accused killer Donald Moeller owned.
Becky's mom, Tina Curl and Becky's step-dad didn't miss out in what was said in court. During the trial, Curl remembered something interesting.
"It's been two years since the investigation and about a few minutes before 9 a.m. and over two years, she remembered being at a rummage sale at a house Donald Moeller was living in," Moeller's Attorney Mike Bulter said.
There were conflicting reports about that memory. Many witnesses who lived near Moeller said they had rummage sales around that time. But for Curl, she remembered that purchase with her daughter.
"Jeff Masten (former Lincoln County prosecutor) asked me about roller skates and I remember going to a lawn sale on Main Street," Curl said.
Moeller's brother never had a thought he was guilty.
"He baby sits my daughter and there's no way, my brother's innocent."
But jurors decided differently.
"The guy, I don't think he cared the way he cut her throat, took out a big chunk on the shoulder and just left her out there."
Moeller had nothing to say after being put on death row over 20 years ago.
This month, he finally admitted to the rape and murder of the 9-year-old.
Now we'll have to wait and see what his last words could be tonight.
