State may offer fewer spring wild turkey licenses

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department is proposing to reduce the number of wild turkey licenses this coming spring by just over 500 tags.

The department is looking to offer residents 105 less one-tag male turkey and 200 less two-tag any turkey licenses for the prairie unit. Licenses would remain unlimited in the Black Hills unit.

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission plans to hold a public hearing on Dec. 6 in Pierre before voting on the proposal.

Proposed season dates are April 13 through May 19, with the archery season starting a week earlier.
