South Dakota Secretary of State warns of erroneous mailings on voting locations

Posted: Updated:

The South Dakota Secretary of State's Office is warning about recent mailings detailing to voters the wrong places to vote on Election Day.

South Dakota's Secretary of State Jason Gant said his office has received numerous complaints from across the state regarding incorrect information on voting locations. According to a news release from the Secretary of State's Office, a Political Action Committee called Every Vote Counts is responsible for the statewide mailing listing of incorrect polling locations to voters in at least Stanley and Pennington Counties.

"We've alerted auditors across the state," Gant said. "Hopefully it's just these two counties."

Democratic Party Chairman Ben Nesselhuf said the letters were mostly sent to democrats and independents. Nesselhuf said Every Vote Counts sent out several thousands of letters reminding people to vote and where they can vote. He said of those locations a small percentage were the incorrect locations.

Nesselhuf confirmed with Secretary of State Jason Gant that incorrect information about polling places was mailed late last week, and they are attempting to contact those voters with the correct information.

"It's a mistake you'd prefer to avoid just before the elections, but we're hustling to take care of it," Nesselhuf said. "Between the works we did this weekend and today, we're confident that everyone will have the right location."

Secretary of State Gant recommends visiting his office's website—www.sdsos.gov—to confirm the location of your correct polling place.

"This type of erroneous information causes confusion among voters as they are preparing to vote in Tuesday's election," Gant said in a news release. "The best advice is to go to www.sdsos.gov and confirm your voter registration, where you vote, and your sample ballot."
